Play Talk UK: The Tommy Boyd Trap

Roll up roll up, get made to look a fool on Play Talk UK, take on Tommy Boyd and his fader, it’s the challenge you’ll never win!

Tommy Boyd has finally read the internet forums and discovered negative posts about Play Talk UK and its ‘talent’ pool. His reaction has been to dedicate his shows on Monday and Tuesday to these ‘forum w*nkers’

Tommy has profiled forum users as wankers that live in bedsits or still live with their parents.
They are young males that don’t drink, don’t smoke, were never good at football, and can’t fight.
These boys are virgins that have never had girlfriends, were most definitely bullied at school, they’ve not had enough love from their parents and are stuck in dead-end jobs.

Tommy was doing his best to try and bait these ‘forum w*nkers’ to call in so that he could go to town on them with his fader.

It goes like this, you call in, Tommy asks you a series of questions about yourself so that he can mock you, when you finally get a chance to speak he’ll fade you down and start shouting abuse over the top, your valid discussion points will never get heard by the audience, this results in Tommy being able to dodge the questions he can’t possibly answer without sounding foolish. When Tommy finally stops ranting, he’ll ask the caller another question, the caller doesn’t answer and hangs up, Tommy announces that the caller is a coward and proclaims yet another victory for himself.
What most listeners probably don’t realise is that Tommy has already cut the caller off before he asks the final question. Tommy can’t lose!

Don’t believe me? Go speak to Eduardo!

There is of course another option, Tommy is inviting these ‘forums w*nkers’ to come to the Play Radio UK car park. Violence solves everything you see, but will it really make Play Talk’s output any better?

It’s a shame that Tommy has had to resort to name calling in an attempt to get some lively calls to his increasingly lightweight, boring show. Podcast Superstore clips anyone?

If Tommy Boyd is so angry with these posts, some of which were produced by me, then he is welcome to call up The Totally Chappers Webcast this Sunday from 8pm. I don’t expect to hear from him though, his weapon of choice ‘the fader’ won’t be at his disposal.

  1. If the people who write on forums are ‘forum wankers’ does that make Boyd are ‘fader wanker’?

    Who is Tommy Boyd?

  3. I think if you listen back to the last 2 duals with callers Tommy did NOT use the fader. You are making cr@p up my friend!

  4. Simon.

If you had read the blog post properly, you will know that I was referring to what Boyd tends to do on the radio and why it is unwise to take him on. I did not give specific dates. Additionally, if you look at the time and date that this blog post was made, you will know it was done before Thursday’s Tommy Boyd show. Perhaps Tommy read this article before he went to air and chose not to fade people out as to prove a point. Look what happened when he didn’t use the fader, John Aldridge DESTROYED Tommy. Even his biggest fans are saying so. Check out http://www.mickynwa.com for example.

    Thank you. xxx

  5. I can say this: I am still a fan of Tommy Boyd because of the listenability and originality of a lot of his output. I know the old bugger can still pull the rabbit out of the hat on occasion like nobody. That having been said, I have had the fader used on me on more than one occasion. Probably most notably when trying to discuss euthanasia and dictatorships back in October 2008, but also when ringing up as an Irishman and proposing swinging reforms to the legal institutions.

When this happens it is hard to take the lines about the station’s free-speech philosophy without a certain cynicism.

I find that he can be a very fulfilling conversation partner when he is in the right mode, but a complete nightmare when you least expect it when his mood is off. People used to say that you got Boyded as a kind of initiation, and that you had to take it because it was your turn and it was good listening for everyone out there and there is SOME truth in that. Nevertheless, the fans appear to be getting a bit tired of the fader and shoutdown approach of late, as indeed they are of quite a bit of repetitiveness in the clips.

On the one hand we cannot expect Tom to do all the work, especially when the volume of talk output on the station has now stretched beyond what the majority of the usual suspects in the listening community can even keep up with - we seem to have gone from a year of one talk show for three hours on a Sunday night that we could all focus around, and where we had all the chats and the video and everything working, to a plethora of shows of variable value over five nights in the week, with some slots like the Sunday nights being fought over by several providers, all of whom are the artistic children of the original show to a greater or lesser extent.

On the other hand I cannot say that observable reality shows that everyone is happy. Right now Tommy seems to be alienating some of his long time fans, gaining possibly a new generation of fans, but they are not very visible to the older community. Possibly some of them are robots. Some of them are racists clutching at the straw that one radio journalist might be willing to give their unrespectable views some air time. In any event, I can’t see that deliberately alienating and provoking people who have walked a long road with him is going to serve any sensible purpose.

  6. Tommy boyd is a legend but all legends need to be dethroned. Folow General Eduardo as he spearheads the army of Internet wankers to rise and revolt against the douhble talking boyd.

  7. John Aldridge had Tommy by the balls.
To call him a liar just because his Skype avatar was a picture of somebody else showed that he had lost the arguement straight away.
And the way he goes on “I’m good at this”, “I’m intelligent”, “I’m clever” etc etc… makes for very very boring listening.
He does not argue with people, he just ties them up with semantics - “You have to listen to every word, its almost like a legal document”. Shut up Boyd.
    Not entertaining listening at all.

  8. What happened with Tommy is like what happened to Totally Chappers, just been reading bout how Ed and Chappers fucked off all the best callers by putting Ed on for days on end ??

Now you guys are attacking Play ?? But if they offered you a slot you’d feel like you’d arrived….

Where is it written that we ‘f*cked off callers’ by Ed being on the show for long periods?

If you took the time to listen the show, you’ll hear that the best exchanges with callers happened when Ed was on the line with others.

I don’t see how getting a slot of Play Talk would make us feel like we’ve arrived. We already have hundreds on downloads, get to do the show when we feel like, work for ourselves, have ranked high in the iTunes charts and been a featured show by the iTunes editors.

What more could Play Talk offer us? Besides taking up our time in traveling and having to pay our own expenses?

  10. I suppose what they could offer is the chance to work alongside some names and to play with some serious studio equipment. That would be worth the expenses and time, in my opinion.

But all of this may be a pipe dream if it is true what is being rumoured that Play Talk will not come back after the recess.

If they do, and if they ever manage to get back to the glory days of when we were all together watching the cams and having a common skype chat with studio involvement, then I’ll be happy.

I think that 9 months of gestation has now given us the ability to say with retrospect that Tommy’s entire new approach after his return in September - that of alienating the regulars, not keeping Stu on side, who could have sorted the cams question out again as quickly as he managed it the first time - abandoning the skype chats, going to quickly to a plethora of shows that outstretched our ability to actively contribute with quality, and padding the difference out with clips that were repeated ad infinitum, and then later on having a big flirtation with a racist agenda political party, these things have been like a case study in how to wreck a media concept. Textbooks of the future will be studied by media students who will learn about Tommy and his partners as people who learned the hard way that the focus group needs to be taken a bit more seriously.

Best when Ed is on ??? The min Paul, rob, chris, stopped calling your show sucked. The best calls were when everyone kept popping at ed let’s be honest your last 5 shows sucked ass and the chart was down to the strength of early shows. Be honest … Endless merchant and johnny ain’t funny.

  12. Hey Mike.

There were only so many shows where comical abuse on the answerphone and live calls directed at Eduardo could be aired before it went stale. CFWW hardly ever called, so no more calls from him was not a loss in any way. The Burnett’s stopped calling for reasons only known to them, perhaps it was because they felt sorry for the exiled CFWW.

Paulie hasn’t stopped calling and has said he would like to know when the shows are taking place.

Interestingly, the podcast stats for the later shows did higher numbers than many of the earlier shows featuring what you claim to be the callers that made the show not suck.

The Merchant is a good caller, if he’s good enough for Iain Lee, then he’s good enough for Totally Chappers. Young callers need to be encouraged so that they can blossom into Eduardo’s of the future.

As for Eduardo, his many characters are the backbone of the show, you’ll be hard pressed to find another caller to Talk Radio that can come up with things off the top of his head whilst on air.

Iain Lee and Ian Watkins will both vouch for the value of Eduardo.

I find it surprising that Play Radio goes on about not being puppet radio and yet what we seem to have is Tommy Boyd as the puppet master and most of the other dj’s as his puppets.

And “General” Eduardo is a genius. A lot of comedy callers make me smile, he makes me laugh. Almost as much as I make myself laugh in fact.
